The Yellow Ribbon Project is a community based program that makes and publically displays wooden yellow ribbons for those serving in our Armed Forces on Active Duty. Each ribbon has the name of one person who has an affiliation with the respective community or to another member of that community. The name of a serviceman or servicewoman is submitted along with information from the submitter so that information can be verified. A ribbon is then inscribed with the name and secured to a power pole or lampost in the community. The ribbon will remain displayed until either the Serviceman or submitter request that it be removed. The ribbon is then given to the Soldier.
The Yellow Ribbon is a message to those Soldiers serving away from home that family and community are aware of the service this man or woman is performing for our Country, and appreciate his/her sacrifice. The ribbon provides the community a constant reminder of each Soldier and their service. It further is a community commitment to let that soldier know that the community is proud and thankful for their service to the Country and the community. The community wishes to express to the soldier and his family that they are constantly in our hearts and prayers and our appreciation is genuine and sincere. Those communities participating in the project realize the sacrifice and service that these Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reservists are performing in our behalf.
The funding and expenses incurred in this project are totally from community and personal donations. No Service Organization or government agency provides any monetary or material support. In order to provide a charitable donation for tax purposes, donations may be funneled through the John Ogburn III Post 12062 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. God Bless and take care of those who protect our freedoms and keep us safe.
The communities involved presently have over 1800 of the wooden ribbons; each with the name of an Active Duty Soldier, Sailor, Marine, Airman or Coast Guard printed on each and prominately displayed along our main streets and highways.
Our abilities to add and maintain the ribbons is limited by funds and volunteer workers but as long as our Service men and women are on active duty, those communities involved will continue to proudly display these ribbons and keep these outstanding members of our communities in our thoughts and prayers.
This project uses no funds or Sponsorship from the VFW but relies solely on the Community and its realization of the sacrifices and involvment of its Armed Forces members. Material donations have been provided by area businesses which are funneled to the John Ogburn III VFW Post 12062 and immediately provided to Tim McBride and his Yellow Ribbon volunteers for their use. Monetary donations to the project are spent to buy materials and supplies that are not donated.
Further information on the project is provided by following any of the links below.
God Bless and take care of them as they take care of us.
