Patriot's Pen

Patriot's Pen, a youth-essay writing contest endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals' contest criteria, is a nationwide competition that gives students in grades 6,7 and 8 the opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. Annually, more than 115,000 students participate in the contest.

Contestants write a 300-400 word essay based on an annual patriotic theme.

"Why America’s Veterans Should be Honored”
Entry Deadline Nov. 1, 2008

The Department of Idaho sponsors this program which is open to any student either in a school or home schooled. The Contest begins on the local level with Post competition. The top three entries are provided local awards and one entry for each 15 participants is submitted to the District level for judging.

the respective VFW District provides an award and entry into the Idaho State competition for the top from the District.

The Idaho State Department of Veterans of Foreign Wars selects the top entry which is submitted to National for further consideration.

Students can enter by submitting the required entry form, along with their essay. Information may also be available at your local School.
